Review A Beautiful Mind
A Beautiful Mind is a film that is lifted from a novel
biography written by Sylvia Nasar. The 459-page novel was written by Sylvia in
great detail, involving people in Nash's life to be interviewed so that in the
biography will be found views of Nash from various perspectives, among them the
brother of Nash (in the film figure this did not come up), Nash's friends,
Alicia's friend (Nash's wife), to the students Nash had taught.
Whether
in A Beautiful Mind book or movie, it is told that the central figure in this
story, John Forbes Nash, is a United States mathematician who specializes in
the field of game theory and differential geometry. Nash was a genius who also
succeeded in creating the economic concept that is now used as the basis of
contemporary economic theory-at which time, the theory created by Nash
contradicts the theory of Mr Smith's modern world economy. This concept is
known as the balance theory, which eventually led to his doctorate, and at the
same time made Nash accepted to be a researcher and teacher at MIT.
The A
Beautiful Mind film opened with young Nash in 1948 who started his first days
of college at a prestigious University, Princeton University. Nash was a
humble, genius, aloof, shy, inferior, introverted, at once strange. In addition,
Nash's figure was also introduced as an arrogant person because of the
cleverness he possessed. This was when Nash preferred to leave the class and
study outside his own class, Nash assumed that with him taking classes in
class, it dulled his brain and eliminated the original idea he had. This is
what makes him also left behind his friends to publish journals for the field
of science they tekuni, because he considers to just publish a journal hence
the idea raised to be the journal must be original ideas born of his own
thoughts, not influenced by the thinking style of other characters.
While
Nash's condition was getting crushed because he had not yet discovered the
original idea for his dissertation report, it was at that moment Nash met
Charles Herman who was none other than Nash's roommate (in the middle of the
story it is known that this Charles is only a delusion experienced by Nash).
Nash's obsession with creating a new theory is illustrated by his love of
writing equation formulas in his window, and Nash is also looking for
inspiration for his theory of things happening in the immediate surroundings,
such as the movement of pigeons fighting to eat in the yard park or pickpocket
events that occur on the highway.
With
Charles's presence in Nash's life, Nash's life became more alive. Nash had
friends to talk about his grievances and all the burdens that lingered in his
mind. After Nash finally got his doctorate, Nash taught at MIT. And that was
when Nash was asked to come to the Pentagon to break the secret code that the
Soviets sent. Then Nash met with secret agent William Parcher. By Parcher, Nash
was given the task of deciphering other passwords that could be found from
several newspapers, as well as spying. Nash's new job was what finally made
Nash obsessed and put aside his relationship with others around him, Nash was
more focused and preoccupied with his own world.
Until
Nash once met Alicia Larde, a student in Nash's class who had attracted Nash's
attention. Through Alicia, Nash can find love and make his life more
meaningful. Nash and Alicia finally got married. But it was then that Nash's
condition got worse, with him feeling that his and Alicia's situation was
threatened by the Soviet army who had no hesitation in killing them for his
work as a spy for government.
Nash's
story reached a climax when he was filling a seminar at Harvard. Where he met
his old friend, Charles. But at that moment Charles did not come alone, Charles
came along with little girls-Marcee, who was none other than Charles's nephew
who was entrusted to him because Marcee's parents left Marcee. In the middle of
the show as Nash filled out the seminar, Nash was frightened when he saw three
people in black shirts looking at each of his moves, which, according to Nash,
these are the people who have been terrorizing his life lately. Nash thought
that these men were spies of the Soviet government who would not hesitate to
kill him. And it was known after Nash's pursuit, it turns out that these people
are Dr.'s men. Rosen-a psychiatrist. The Presence of Dr. It was this Rosen who
later gave answers to the presence of Charles, Marcee, and Parcher-who turned
out the three characters were delusions experienced by Nash.
A third
of the movie A Beautiful Mind describes Nash's struggle to fight his illness.
And of course, Nash was very grateful for Alicia's presence that always gave
moral support to him to be able to fight his penyakt and healed again as usual.
The
ending of the film is shown when Nash was awarded a nobel prize in economics in
1994, although at first Nash thought that a man like himself would not have
earned such a prestigious award. This film provides a very good moral message,
namely d ibalik physical perfection and even the greatness and genius of a
person's brain, there must always be shortcomings in it. Because no human is
perfect. Humans are equipped with advantages, but coupled with the lack,
because it is true human beings, always have a balance.
