(Test
of English as a Foreign Language)
Test of English as a
Foreign Language (TOEFL /ˈtoʊfəl/ TOH-fəl) is a standardized test to measure
the English language ability of non-native speakers wishing to enroll in
English-speaking universities. The test is accepted by many English-speaking
academic and professional institutions.
TOEFL is the standardization of one's English
ability in writing which includes four aspects:

listening comprehension,

Grammar structure and written
expression,
-
reading comprehension, and parts
-
writing.
Until now TOEFL has experienced 3 evolution of
change of format since it was first made 47 years ago. In addition to the
format changes, TOEFL also experienced very different changes in terms of
results / values, as seen in the following chart:
• Year 1964 - 1998 TOEFL Paper Based Test (PBT)
PBT (Paper-Based Test)
Paper-based test is a
very popular type of TOEFL held in educational institutions, tutoring places,
and specialized language institutions. Following this test, you are like taking
a regular test, which is present in place and do the printed matter. The test
is done for approximately 3 hours and consists of listening, structure & written
expression, reading comprehension, and writing.
• Year 1998 - 2005 TOEFL Computer Based Test (CBT)
CBT (Computer-Based
Test)
This type of TOEFL test
is becoming less popular because it replaced the iBT format. The beginning of
the emergence of 1998 as an alternative form of PBT. During the Listening session,
participants use headphones. However, when taking this type of test you can not
repeat the previous question if left behind. The total duration of workmanship
is about 4 hours including guidance reading.
• Year 2005 - Now TOEFL Internet Based Test
iBT (Internet-Based
Test)
This test format became
popular late 2005, replacing computer-based and paper-based. Basically the
format of the problem is the same as paper-based, but without session
structure. This is the main difference between PBT and iBT. In addition, the
order of questions and duration are slightly different.
